5月に来日したモディ首相との写真撮影という、大変光栄な機会を頂戴し、驚いていたのも束の間、小池博史演出ーマハーバーラタプロジェクトがインド首相自らがホストを務めているラジオ番組Mann Ki Baatで取り上げられました！プロジェクトの集大成である「完全版マハーバーラタ」が映画で蘇り、９月２３日（金）、２４日（土）にインド大使館で試写会を行います。

文化庁主催事業、東京オリンピック・パラリンピックの関連事業「東京2020 NIPPONフェスティバル」共催プログラム。世界三大叙事詩のひとつであるインドの「マハーバーラタ」全編を舞台化した、「愛の章」「嵐の章」の前後編、上演時間6時間半、2021年8月になかのZEROホールで上演した小池博史演出の舞台作品が映画として蘇る。

アジア各国の伝統舞踊や演劇・美術・音楽・映像を融合、メルティングした空間演出により、舞台を創造する空間演出家、小池博史が2013年からマハーバーラタの完全舞台化を目指し、9年に及んだ取り組みの集大成であり、これまでにインド、カンボジア、インドネシアなど9カ国で7作品を制作し、全40回の公演を実施、絶大な称賛を受けてきた。

舞台の撮影・映像の編集は映画監督でもある白尾一博が担当し、映像作家でもある小池は総合ディレクションとして参画する。非常にゆっくりした画像表現から激しいカット割による表現、それらを組み合わせた形で映像自体にリズムを持たせ、6時間半という長時間の舞台を臨場感溢れる画期的な舞台芸術の映像作品として完成させる。

インド独立75周年及び日印国交樹立70周年記念である2022年、人類が目指す愛と平和をどのように実現するのか、舞台から映像へと進化した「完全版マハーバーラタ 〜愛の章／嵐の章」を観ながら感じ取り、問い続けていただければと思います。

In the summer of 2021, 14 dancers, actors and musicians from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan came together in Tokyo to create the great Hindu epic of Mahabharata as a theatrical performance. The production was directed by Japanese director, Hiroshi Koike. The entire multilingual show was 6 hours and was performed in August 2021 as part of the cultural program of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Now, the performance is being edited as a film and will be screened to the public at the Embassy of India in Tokyo on May 20th and 21st.

Since 2013, the production’s director, Hiroshi Koike has worked with many different artists from all around Asia to blend various traditional performing arts, theater forms, fine art, music and media to present the entire Mahabharata as a world where many elements blend together in time and space. The production was produced in various sections in over 9 countries, including India, Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand, and has been staged 40 times.

The film version is edited by Kazuhiro Shirao, a film director, who has produced full length films and documentaries. The atmosphere in the theater will be shown in film as a rhythmical show of various speeds and will be a new style of experience performing arts.

The screening of the film of The Mahabharata will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence ＆ 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and India. The Mahabharata ~Chapter of Desire / ~Chapter of Tempest makes us think of the question, can we move towards love and peace instead of destruction?
